Heart disease prevention and cure: diagnosis HEART DISEASE PREVENTION AND CURE: DIAGNOSIS
To the practitioner, every individual patient's group of signs and symptoms is a challenge to his knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and psychology. The possibilities of bony displacements, growths, abscesses, over-dilated blood-vessels and nervous disorders must be investigated. Any of these may affect the heartbeat, and at the same time may produce general or localized signs. Always we remind ourselves that what the patient feels to be wrong is important, yet we must not be misled by the patient's interpretation of symptoms and must check each item by our own observation. Among signs of which the patient may be totally unaware, yet which are highly revealing to the trained observer, are abnormally sized pupils, unusual responses in the brain or nervous system, changes in the iris of the eye and abnormal states of the blood vessels around the neck and within the retinas.
Also significant are readings of blood-pressures, although by no means automatically so. Their meaning depends largely upon the overall circumstances of the patient at the time of taking the readings, also upon the presence or absence of abnormality in any of the vital organs or systems. With the exception of a short explanation to be given later, this is beyond our present scope; knowledge of blood-pressure figures is more likely to worry than to help the patient, and interpretation should be left to the trained naturopath.
Such a practitioner can be relied upon not to attempt to treat symptoms, or to replace one distress by another. Nor will he add to the patient's problems by making impressive and alarming diagnosis. Furthermore, it is quite possible that by means of non-violent and non-suppressive manipulation, he may be able to relieve at least the greater part of the patient's distress in a short space of time. This is something about which the orthodox physician knows little or nothing. He knows that he can produce dramatic effects by administering powerful drugs, but manipulative techniques mean almost nothing to him.
