Food allergy: the great controversy

        FOOD ALLERGY: THE GREAT CONTROVERSY
No-one writing about food intolerance can claim to be reflecting 'majority-opinion' because there are such widely differing views on the subject. By looking at those differences in opinion first, before considering food intolerance in detail, we hope to give the reader a better understanding of our own viewpoint on the subject.
Why is there so much disagreement over food intolerance? And why do so many doctors regard it as a 'media illness', the outcome of ill-informed publicity? There is no simple answer to this question, but it is an important one nonetheless. The disagreement is not over whether food intolerance exists -few doctors would dispute that it does. What is at issue is the prevalence of the problem, and the sort of symptoms it can cause.
The question of prevalence is problematic because there are no reliable data available. Estimates of how many people suffer from food intolerance range from a very conservative 0.3 per cent to a rather implausible 90 per cent. Most of the doctors who study food intolerance in the UK would put the figure at somewhere between 10 and 25 per cent.
Controversy over the sort of symptoms caused by food intolerance is equally fierce. The orthodox view is that foods are unlikely to cause symptoms such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease (a severe inflammation of the bowel), and that only certain sorts of foods might trigger off migraine. The idea of foods causing mental problems, such as depression, anxiety, hyperactivity or even psychosis is considered quite outrageous by most orthodox doctors and psychiatrists. The list of complaints attributed to food intolerance, contains many other controversial items.
A related issue is the type of symptoms caused by food allergy. Although most allergists have now come round to the idea that allergic reactions to foods may cause asthma and eczema, not all have. And few are willing to accept that other problems, such as hyperactivity in children, might be linked to food allergy.
